Charlie, Meagan and Great Grandma Hilma, Fischer Family Reunion 2012 (6/23/12, Joe Kopp)
I received a special message from Charlie yesterday. Actually it was from my mom. I have no doubt...
Charlie never got to meet either of my parents, but I know that they know Charlie. I posted a blog here on February 2, 2010, when Charlie was just weeks old -- "Charlie and Her Great Grandpa Tom" -- about Charlie being soothed when I hummed an old tune that my dad had always sung for us kids and his grandkids. I had an eerie sense that she wasn't hearing it for the first time. I felt that Dad had been already dancing our beansprout around Heaven, singing his little ditty for her.
I have my mother's sewing chest in our living room now, its drawers filled with knickknacks placed there by Mom when she still used it. Charlie is intrigued with the contents of those drawers, and I allow her to look through them, always reminding her to be careful, because those things belonged to my mama, Great Grandma Rose. And I tell her how much Great Grandma Rose would love her.
Charlie has never asked me where Great Grandma Rose is, but recently, in preparing her for the Fischer Family Reunion, I told her that she'd soon be seeing Great Grandma Hilma, who is Grandpa Greg's mama. She matter-of-factly said, "And I'll see Great Grandma Rose."
So that's what Charlie knows about Great Grandma Rose. And of course she's seen lots of pictures. Back to last night...
Charlie was playing LOUDLY, screaming with delight as she barreled into her mommy or daddy's arms. We were all laughing, but I remembered my mom being, well, let's say, displeased, when we would scream while we were playing, so I just mentioned that Great Grandma Rose would not be enjoying all that noise.
Charlie didn't acknowledge that she'd heard me mention her great grandma, but a few minutes later, as she was running into Meagan's arms, she threw over her shoulder, "Great Grandma Rose loves you, Gramma," and carried on with her game.
Like I said, I received a special message from my mom last night, via her great granddaughter. And I treasure it.

ReplyDeletewe do not know what happens to the engery that is us when the body dies. I like to think that we do not stop but move to another level. I like to think that sometimes those who pass can sometimes send us messages. Love the story .. and you cannot help bout think about the Way she gave you the message.Very sweet.
ReplyDeleteThank you, John. The feeling that our loved ones can still communicate with us after they're gone somehow makes losing them more bearable, at least for me. Thanks for reading.
